Are you good with following directions?
I’m not. In fact I’m down right horrible at it.
I used to think it was a flaw. But now I’ve embraced how my mind works & I encourage others to do the same.
So when I was first told that I needed to grieve in a certain pattern or cope with stress in a particular way I think I laughed out loud.
Not even kidding.
So when you hear me bring up the phrase, Creative Coping, nothing is textbook.
I’m all about what works for YOU. Not what works for the experts.
Now, let me say this before anyone gets upset. The experts aren’t wrong. There is tons of research out there that backs up lots of data.
But I’m here to give you a real outlook on coping. You won’t find any long winded answers or BS.
Personally, I’ve used creative techniques several times in my life. Without them I would probably be in a bad place in life.
My favorite form of creativity has been crafts. Everything from paper flowers to building a dollhouse from recyclables to crafting my own balloon towers.
What Is Creative Coping?
In its most simplest form creative coping can be defined as coping in a outlet that is creative to you.
In other words. You are using a hobby, talent, or skill to cope with a situation in life.
You will hear the term creative coping a lot in terms of coping with grief & loss.
However, you can use it to cope with :
- And more
How Does Creative Coping Work?
Think of it as art therapy, with or without the art.
A lot of times when we go through something, such as grief or stress, we can’t express our feelings into words.
We know somewhat how we’re feeling but there’s always something under the surface that we can’t put our finger on.
That’s where creative coping comes into play.
It’s a form of therapy that you do in your own way & in your own time.
Benefits of Creative Coping
Lifts You Up
Anytime we go through something, even if it seems small, it affects our emotions.
Allowing yourself time to be involved in something creative will help lift you up.
Gives You An Outlet
It can be hard sometimes to just get our feelings out there.
We may not:
- have the words
- want to offend anyone
- want to deal with it
Using alternative forms of therapy, like creative coping, gives you that chance to express yourself.
Think about it like watching a movie. How many emotions do you go through while watching a movie?
In just an hour & a half you probably experience joy, laughter, sadness, frustration, & anger.
It’s the same with creative coping. While doing your painting or even taking an acting class, you begin to connect with what you’re doing. Which in turn starts to unlock those emotions.
Unlocks New Passions For You
I bet you had no idea that you were creative. Thinking that creativity was only for those who liked to draw.
But being creative is so much more than that. All you have to do is be willing to try. You never know what you may uncover that you like to do.
A friend of mine discovered that he really had a flare for woodworking when he was grieving over the loss of his job.
